Introduction:
Department of geography of Urdu University Gulshan Campus, has been playing its important role to place the institution high graded at the graduation level. Currently this department has introduced GIS and remote sensing in the post graduate classes which is no doubt a modern oriented subject and in near future Marketing Geography, Medica Geography, Transportation Geography and Industrial Geography are intended to be introduced in near future

Historical Background:
Department of Geography was established in 1971 at Gulshan Campus. In the beginning when the University was a Federal Government Urdu Science College, Geography as a optional subject was introduced in the intermediate as well as degree courses. It has been mostly with the combination of Geology and Chemistry but later it was included in the combination of Physics and Mathematics in both intermediate and at degree levels. Post graduation in Geography was started in 1983 with affiliate with Karachi University. Since this institution has been declared as a full-fledged university a new combination of Geography, Astronomy & Mathematics has been introduced in B. Sc (Hons) courses.

Current Activity:
Department of Geography is establishing a departmental Seminar Library i.e. Prof. Muhammad Ashfaq Khan Seminar Library (MAKSEL) after the name of the former Head of the Department of Geography, Muhammad Ashfaq Khan who died on 22nd of December 2004. He was a prominent Geographer and an executive of K.G.A. He was a great Scholar.

Department plans to send a team comprising teachers and brilliant students to all Pakistan tours every year. Aim and object is to capture all physical features in Videos, Snaps and CDs from Geographical aspects. Recently as a result of all Pakistan Tour by a team of students and teachers.

Mission:
Standard of teaching should be improved by using all modern techniques i.e. overhead, slide and multimedia Computer projectors.
